A Hint of Magic Bewitched by Magic The Demon Diaries edition by Claire Chilton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Claire Chilton has two excellent rebellious teen girl fantasy series, ("Outliers/Squishies" and "Demon Diaries"), but figuring out which books go where is a challenge. I have answered that challenge and am happy to offer a guiding hand. Because hey, what else are fans for?

The "Demon Diaries" series features Demonic Dora Carradine. There are five books in this series, though they were not published in the same order they should be read. This book, Book 0, is "A Hint of Magic" and introduces Dora. Book 4 is "A Hint of Hell" and introduces Kieron, the demon. The main story kicks off in Book 1, "Demonic Dora", and is followed by Book 2, "Deceased Dora", and Book 3, "Divine Dora".

So there you have it. The full story to date. Now, what do we think of this first book in the Demon Diaries series? Well, I like Dora. She's smart, smart mouth, alert, observant, vulnerable, kick ass, insecure, lovelorn, wise and immature. She is irreverent in the literal sense, (so be warned if you are sensitive to jokes at the expense of organized religion). She is a kaleidoscope of teen girl emotions, wrapped up in a hard candy coating.

In this opener Dora is searching for a bit of magic in her life. It is a teaser and the series doesn't really take off until the next book, "Demonic Dora", when she finds that dark magic she wants so badly, and the adventure really takes off. So, this is more of an establishing project and viewed in that light it is perfectly successful. You get a lot of snappy dialogue, (and every character does get some good lines), but then you also get Dora's commentary on the action, which is usually measured, thoughtful and even a bit deadpan. So you get manic action, backed up by wry observations and reflections, which I found appealing.

Because this is a bit of a "taster" it isn't very deep and just sort of zips along. But, you will get the flavor of the series, which explains why it's a freebie, and it's nice to know the series gets even better, sharper and funnier as it progresses. I just thought this was a nice find.

A Hint of Magic Bewitched by Magic The Demon Diaries edition by Claire Chilton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Dora, the lippy daughter of a televangelist, can’t seem to do anything right and is completely hemmed in. She turns to witchcraft to get away, none too sure of what she’s doing. Dora’s attempts to join a coven of peculiar witches lead to further complications. The writing is funny (when she asks which way is north in the witch's shop and is told to face the Twinkies, “She turned to face the stacks of indestructible pastries, wondering why they were in the stockroom of a magic shop”). The typos are a bit distracting, but the character of Dora and the humor in this prequel to the Demon Diary series are enough to make you want to try book 1.
Meet Dora, a high school freshman and magic-enthusiast. Dora is expected to life an exemplary and ordinary life as the daughter of a reverend, but she wont have any of that. Desperate to find magic, in her otherwise boring and unsatisfactory life, she stumbles across a witch-cove, who assign her several tasks in order to prove herself worthy of joining them, and control magic. During one of her assignments, she meets a boy, who curiously turns up at another location, where she has some witch-business, then he suddenly goes missing. Things turn for the worst, nothing is what it seems to be.

A Hint of Magic is a great prequel to The Demon Diaries, which follows Dora on her paranormal adventures. The book does not have a cliffhanger ending, however it leaves you longing for more! A really enjoyable quick read, I would recommend it to anyone!
I loved it. Looking forward to reading part two. The beginning almost had me put the book down. But, as I read deeper, the story got interesting and is a real page turner. I am the author of Demon Stalker and I write fantasy fiction and though, I prefer to write and read my own books, A Hint Of Magic grabbed my attention. As they say, never judge a book by it's cover. Though, far different than my writing, I fell in love with the Character Dora and imagined her like my own daughter. So full of mischief, life and curiosity. This book is a must read!!!!
Michael Fulkerson--Author of Demon Stalker and Career Thief.
Claire Chilton shows true potential as an author and is a master at weaving a story.
Dora is not happy with her life. Her father is a televangelist and tries to control all aspects of her life. She just wants some magic, even if she has to get it from dark forces. She thinks all of her wishes are about to come true when she joins the local coven of witches.

This is just an introduction of Dora and her world. So the title is very accurate. Don't expect a lot of magic here. You will get to meet Dora and start to see her personality. Dora tends more to misadventures than true adventure. She bumbles her way through in a humorous series of encounters.

I had a few minor quibbles with the story though. I couldn't figure out Dora's father. He is a televangelist but he always takes confessions. I haven't heard of any denomination of religion that would cover both of those. Dora seems to a fairly typical rebellious ten trying to be unique and different (like everybody else). She is sarcastic and curses frequently. Perhaps not as much as she could, but more than I really wanted to hear. (I admit I am a prude about this though.) I had trouble trying to figure out for what age this series is meant. It reads like a teen or slightly older story but then with the language, it also feels like it is meant for a slightly older audience. Finally, there were some rough spots but I think they were probably due to differences between British and American phrasing.

The story serves its function of introduction well. The reader will easily be able to decide if they want to read more about Dora after reading this short story. I always appreciate a short introduction so you don't have to make a huge investment of time, especially when it is a full story and not just a teaser like so many others. I would rate this 3.5 stars.
